What is AS9101?
Quality Management Systems Audit Requirements
for Aviation, Space, and Defense Organizations
Anyone planning to certify to AS9100C, AS9110A, or AS9120A should have a copy of this document.
What is AS9101?
This standard defines requirements for the preparation and execution
of the audit process. (This is what the Registrars will use to
perform your audit)
Additionally, it defines the content & composition for reporting audit
conformity and process effectiveness to the 9100-series standards,
the organization’s QMS documentation, and customer/regulatory requirements.
What Changed?
Focus on EFFECTIVENESS and not just conformity
Every process should be audited to determine:
- Is the process identified and appropriately defined?
- Are responsibilities defined?
- Are procedures implemented and maintained?
- Is the process achieving effective results?
New Terms with related forms in the appendices
- Containment
- OASIS
- Major Nonconformity
- Minor Nonconformity
- Nonconformity Report (NCR)
- Objective Evidence Record (OER)
- Process Effectiveness Assessment Report (PEAR)
Why Change?
- To align AS9101 with the 2009 versions of the standards
- Integrate the requirements of ISO 17021 for CB's
- To focus on a process based approach. (NOTE: It is NOT a checklist)
What AS&D Standards will use AS9101?
Historically, each of the Aerospace Standards had their own checklist:
- AS9100:2004 (Rev B) used AS9101C
- AS9110:2003 used AS9111
- AS9120:2002 used AS9121
The IAQG has now simplified the audit process, and AS9101D applies to:
- AS9100:2009 Rev C-QMS Requirements for AS&D Organizations
- AS9110:2009 Rev A-QMS Requirements for AS&D Maintenance Organizations
- AS9120:2009 Rev A-QMS Requirements for AS&D Distributors
When should we upgrade to AS9100C/AS9110A/AS9120A?
It depends on when you intend to become registered. If it is beyond
2010 then the 2009 versions may make sense for you. If you are
on track to be registered sometime this year, I'd stick with the
previous versions. The registrars haven't completed training and
the registration audit details are still pending.
AAQG has put together a timeline to help you.
